BBC Breakfast star admits 'you've set me off' following 'groundbreaking' update
BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty were on the iconic red sofa this morning as they made a major announcement
A BBC Breakfast star found himself becoming quite emotional on-air after confessing "you've set me off" as a response to a particularly 'nostalgic' update.
The touching moment took place during the Thursday morning broadcast (August 21) when longstanding presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty once again returned to our screens. Sitting together on the iconic red sofa, the duo presented the day's top stories.
Yet it was one particular announcement that left Mike Bushell taking a trip down memory lane, as Charlie announced: "A groundbreaking soap is set to return to our screens but for just one episode."
At that point, Naga chimed in and explained: "Brookside. It launched the careers of Ricky Tomlinson, Sue Johnston and Anna Friel and it’s making a comeback in a crossover episode with Hollyoaks - the soap which succeeded it."
The programme then cut to a special pre-recorded segment, fronted by BBC reporter Annie Knowlson. In the segment Annie looked back at the show's most memorable moments, offering viewers at home a sense of nostalgia, the Express reports.
Once the pre-recorded segment wrapped up, Naga was the first to react stating: "A lot of people will be enjoying that and reminiscing."
Charlie quickly echoed her thoughts, adding: "Yes Brookside, absolutely." Clearly moved by the throwback, Mike then admitted: "It’s the theme tune isn’t it. You’ve set me off now, the nostalgia."
After being absent from TV for more than 22 years, Brookside is making a brief comeback in the form of a historic crossover with Hollyoaks. The special event has been commissioned to celebrate its 30th anniversary later this year.
When Brookside finished its run in 2003, Hollyoaks stepped in as Channel 4's ongoing drama. This upcoming crossover episode will serve not only as a tribute to its predecessor but will also honour the show's creator Sir Phil Redmond.
The popular Channel 4 soap was known for addressing groundbreaking social issues which were often seen to be ahead of its time, something which Hollyoaks has continued.

The special crossover is set to bring back some of Brookside's iconic characters as a rare treat for viewers. However, producers have yet to reveal exactly which familiar faces will be making a return, as the full details are still under wraps.
Executive producer Hannah Cheers expressed her excitement about the upcoming special. She said: "This episode is a love letter to both Hollyoaks and Brookside. Brookside gave birth to Hollyoaks - it grew up on the same site and eventually took over its sets.
She went on to reflect on the deep ties between the two soaps, adding: "For everyone at Lime Pictures (originally Mersey TV), Hollyoaks' history is deeply rooted in Brookside, and its legacy lives on through our crew and, of course, some of our cast."
