BBC Line of Duty star's 'compelling' drama is taking Netflix by storm

The five part ITV series Mrs Biggs, starring Line of Duty's Daniel Mays and Sheridan Smith, has recently arrived on Netflix.

A drama featuring BBC star Sheridan Smith and Line of Duty's Daniel Mays has been storming the Netflix's top 10 rankings, with viewers branding it "utterly compelling" and a "masterpiece". The show first came out over a decade ago, and has recently resurfaced.


The five-episode series, Mrs Biggs - which originally aired on ITV in 2012 - has emerged back into the limelight following its debut on the streaming service. Written by Jeff Pope, the period drama chronicles the extraordinary true tale of Charmian Biggs, wife of infamous great train robber Ronnie Biggs.


Sheridan portrays the leading character of Charmian, whilst Daniel plays Ronnie, in the programme based on the true tale that has captivated viewers once more over a decade later.


The actress secured a BAFTA award for Best Actress for her portrayal, with critics at the time declaring it among her finest of her career performances.

Netflix viewers have now shared their thoughts as the have been binge-watching the show. One person wrote on Twitter: "Just finished watching back-to-back Mrs Biggs on catch up... utterly compelling... well done on your part – you made me cry!"

Another commented: "@danielmays5 & @Sheridansmith1 amazing work in Mrs Biggs, entertaining, moving & compelling. Thank you both & everybody else involved."

A third viewer wrote: "Mrs Biggs, what can I say! ! ! Fantastic and compelling viewing." Fans of the series also took to Google to leave their thoughts, as one noted: "Sheridan Smith as usual is so good. A true British icon, Daniel is not too bad either."

"Sheridan Smith is a triumph. She is really in a class of her own. Gritty, glamorous, vulnerable, sensitive, determined yet adrift. No one plays these parts better," someone else added.


The series follows Charmian's stormy romance with Ronnie, starting with their initial encounter on a London commuter train, their wedding in Devon, and the aftermath of the 1963 Great Train Robbery that rocked Britain.

The synopsis reads: "A passionate love affair begins when Charmian Powell meets Ronnie Biggs on a London commuter train, but her father's disapproval forces the couple to elope to Devon."


The star-studded cast is full of familiar faces from screens, including Adrian Scarborough, recognised for his roles in Gavin & Stacey and The Chelsea Detective, features as Bernard Powell, while Caroline Goodall (The White Princess) takes on the role of Muriel Powell.

Claire Rushbrook (Sherwood) embodies Ruby Wright, and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) stars as Alan Wright.

For Daniel, who has since received acclaim for his performances in Line of Duty and Des, the series was praised as another opportunity for the actor to demonstrate his versatility. For Sheridan, it further solidified her status as one of the UK's most beloved TV stars.

All five instalments of Mrs Biggs are currently available to stream on Netflix and ITVX.
