Bob MacIntyre gears up for Ryder Cup with solid sign-off to Stateside Tour season at East Lake
The Scottish star ends his week at the Tour Championship with a third round in the sixties to conclude his event
Scots star Bob MacIntyre signed off his PGA term in solid style at the Tour Championship.
The Oban ace fired a final-day 69 at East Lake to end his round in the Top 20 of the FedEx Cup finale.
MacIntyre’s excellent work through the regular season landed him a spot in Atlanta and, although he didn’t get the title he craved, his forward momentum was maintained.
The 29-year-old made a superb start to the end-of-US-season showpiece with rounds of 64 and 66 pushing him amongst the pacesetters at the halfway stage.
The Scottish hero’s hopes of the crown were extinguished when he faltered during Saturday’s third round and a 72 dropped him out of realistic contention when it came to winning the tournament.
However, MacIntyre recovered in typical fashion to post a third round out of four in the sixties to conclude the week.
At one stage, MacIntyre was pushing towards the coattails of the leaders when getting to the Sunday turn in three-under par with four birdies on the way out to press himself onto the top page of the leaderboard.
But he lost ground on the back nine with a second visit of the week to the water on the treacherous par three 15th dropping him out of the Top 10.
Nonetheless, three pars to finish ensured another under-par outing to back-up last weekend's runner-up show at the BMW Championship ahead of his return home from the States for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and his final appearance before heading to The Ryder Cup.
Captain Luke Donald has half of his Bethpage team in place after Rasmus Hojgaard joined Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and the Scot in the European side.
Hojgaard sealed his spot after his tied 13th finish in the final qualifying event, the Betfred British Masters.
Donald said: “There’s no question that finalising the automatic qualifiers is a major milestone in every Ryder Cup journey and I’m delighted to welcome Rasmus to Team Europe.
“Rookies can bring an energy and excitement that inspires even the most experienced players, and having been part of the team behind the team in Rome, I have no doubt that Rasmus will be full of enthusiasm for the challenge of Bethpage Black.
“All six players have put in exceptional performances across the qualification period, and I look forward to each and every one of them being a part of the 2025 team.”
McIlroy was the first player to automatically qualify with Rose and Fleetwood next to secure their places. MacIntyre and Hatton were the final players to tie down spots before the qualification race came down to the last event.
MacIntyre sealed his spot after finishing in second place behind World No.1 Scottie Scheffler at the BMW Championship. The World No.8 was also runner-up at the US Open behind J.J. Spaun in June and a month later finished in a tie for seventh at The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The Scotsman enjoyed a memorable debut for Team Europe in 2023, going undefeated as a rookie and earning two and a half points from three matches.
Captain Donald will complete his 12-player team when he announces his six Captain’s Picks on Monday week.
