Bob MacIntyre's phone book is brimming as believing Scot seeks epic season finale
Scottish star in contact with the elite on and off the course as he guns for East Lake glory in showpiece
Bullish Bob MacIntyre believes he can go from treatment table to title winner and land the FedEx Cup.
If he pulls it off, the Scottish star's phone is likely to light-up with congrats from the game’s elite on a staggering $10 million success.
Ryder Cup-bound MacIntyre heads into the weekend at East Lake just three shots off the leaders as he guns for glory in Atlanta.
The Oban star was unbale to have a real run at the end-of-season showpiece 12 months ago due to injury, but rounds of 64 and 66 upon his return have him bang in the mix to go one better than his 2024 runner-up finishes at both the US Open in June and BMW Championship last week.
MacIntyre is a key part of a congested leaderboard having battled against his fitness 12 months ago as he said: “I was struggling with injury. I was lucky just to get on the golf course last year. I think I finished 17th, so trying to go better, but yeah, this week, I’m trying to win the golf tournament, trying to win the whole thing.
“It’s the top 30 guys. If half of us are playing good, then it’s going to be packed at the top. It looks like the majority of guys are playing well and it’s just log-jammed now a little bit. That’s what you want to see. That’s what you want coming into the final two rounds of the final event of the season. It’s every man for himself out there now.
MacIntyre led the way at the BMW last weekend at the halfway stage, but, although not on top heading into the last 36 holes this time around, he’s bang in the mix and will go out in the penultimate group on Saturday alongside in-form Cameron Young in the pairing behind pacesetters Tommy Fleetwood and Russell Henley.
Damp conditions have made impressive scoring possible so far, but he explained: “I don’t know because the greens are still firm. You miss a fairway and you pitch it on the green, it is firm. I mean, it’s still a good test. 13-under par leading, Still decent. The fairways have become a little bit wider because they’re softer. But if you miss them, into the greens is difficult. Obviously we hope for it to firm up a little bit, but I don’t want the greens getting too firm because then it becomes carnage for me as well.”
MacIntyre’s work over the opening 36 holes have once again cemented his position amongst the cream of the game.
The Scot currently sits in the World’s Top 10 and found only Scottie Scheffler too strong for him over the full 72 holes last weekend in Maryland.
While colleagues are scrambling for the final remaining spots and awaiting picks from skipper Luke Donald for The Ryder Cup, MacIntyre is already safely qualified for Bethpage as he sits second in the standings behind Rory McIlroy.
Donald’s unit are close mates and the Scot is a big part of the gang after his successful debut in Rome two years. In an amusing aside, MacIntyre was asked how many numbers he didn't have in his phone when the Ryder Cup group chat started for Italy back in 2023. He said: “Out of the 12 players, probably eight of them.” He then laughed: “Yeah. A bit different now!”
