A man once accused of breaking into Ibrox Stadium and left a Celtic flag is behind bars for a brutal domestic attack after an Old Firm game.

Joseph Mulheron turned on Penny Anglim at her flat in Glasgow's Castlemilk on April 7, 2024.

The 54-year-old was enraged as he falsely accused Miss Anglim of cheating on him with his brother.

Mulheron repeatedly beat Miss Anglim, strangled her and stabbed her with a knife and fork.

Mulheron was cleared of conducting himself in a disorderly manner at Rangers' stadium in 2022 after the case was deserted.

He was claimed to have climbed the gates at Ibrox, discarded a Celtic flag and spat on the pitch as well as recording the incident on an electronic device.

A video of the alleged incident appeared on social media where a man can be hard saying: "The f***ing flag is waving, it's f***ng waving."

Mulheron was found guilty of his latest charge of assaulting his then partner Miss Anglim to her severe injury and danger of life.

The court heard that Miss Anglim and Mulheron had been at a local bar to watch the Rangers and Celtic 3-3 draw at Ibrox. The pair returned home where Mulheron claimed that she had cheated with his brother.

Prosecutor Ryan Watson told jurors in his closing speech: "She described him going for her, punching her repeatedly on the face using both hands.

"She described being hit like how a man would be hit. She was pulled by her hair to the ground then he continued to kick her all over her body."

Miss Anglim lay in the foetal position for her safety while Mulheron "laid into" her. Mulheron then struck her on the head with her mobile phone and smashed it.

Mr Watson added: "Mulheron then stabbed her on the head with a fork and placed two hands around her throat and squeezed, choked and strangled her."

Miss Anglim believed that Mulheron was going to kill her during the horror ordeal. Mulheron took a kitchen knife and threatened to "cut" her with it then put it against her face.

Mr Watson said: "When he was on top of her, he proceeded to drop the knife on her head and laughed as he did it."

Jurors heard Miss Anglim apologised to Mulheron for the accusation in the belief that it would make the attack stop.

They were told that Mulheron got his mobile phone and recorded her doing this but the allegation was deleted from the charge by the jury.

Mulheron left the flat as just as her mother entered in a planned visit. A "hysterical" Miss Anglim told her mother what Mulheron had done to her before she was taken to the hospital. She was found to have suffered facial swelling, her left eye was swollen shut, bruising to her face and abdominal pain.

Mulheron told jurors in his evidence that he was the victim of an attack by Miss Anglim. He stated that she hit her face off the ground during a struggle.

Mulheron further claimed that he put his hand around Miss Anglim's neck to for three seconds to "get leverage" to get up from the ground.

Des Ziolo, defending, told the court that his client has previous convictions for domestic matters but has never received a custodial sentence.

Sheriff Michael Hanlon deferred sentence until next month pending background reports. The sheriff said: "A custodial sentence is very much in my mind.

"Mr Mulheron was given the privilege of bail while the trial was ongoing but standing the serious nature of the offence, I withdraw bail and he will be remanded into custody."
