Coffee shop owner shows 'right way' to make iced lattes at home as people make 2 mistakes
A coffee shop owner has shared a 'game-changing' tutorial on how to make an iced latte at home and it turns out you might have been doing it wrong this whole time
Lots of people reach for a cup of coffee when they need an energy kick thanks to the drink's caffeine hit. Some brew their own at home while others frequently indulge in one when they're out and about, whether that's an espresso, cappuccino, americano or mocha.
During summer months and spells of hot weather, many choose an iced coffee alternative, and might even contemplate preparing it at home to slash expenses. An iced latte, crafted with espresso, milk and ice, offers a cooling and creamy option. Josh, who runs a coffee shop located in Martinsville, Virginia in the US has shared a clip on TikTok to share how people have been preparing iced lattes incorrectly.
The coffee specialist admitted that he hates to be the bearer of bad news but told his viewers that they have likely been making iced lattes wrong this whole time.
He said: "I own a coffee shop and I'm gonna show you the most common mistake I see when people are making iced lattes at home and I'll show you how we make them at our coffee shop."
Beginning with a demonstration of what to avoid, Josh noted that the crucial element when crafting an iced latte is the sequence in which you combine the components.
He explained: "So, what a lot of people do is they'll start with ice and then they'll take hot espresso and then they'll pour the hot espresso directly onto the ice and what happens when you pour hot liquid onto ice, yeah you got it right, it melts and that turns into water."
The coffee shop owner emphasised that water is the "number one thing" to avoid in an iced latte.
He revealed that a common "mistake" he's observed is people adding sweeteners, such as syrup, sauces or honey, at the end of the process.
Josh explained that the issue with this approach is that the sweeteners remain "suspended in the cold liquid" and "won't actually dissolve into the drink."
According to him, this results in either a mouthful of sweeteners or a watery, coffee milk concoction when you take a sip of the iced latte.
He then showed the "right way to make an iced latte", beginning with a cup of ice before using a separate container to first add the sweetener and then the hot espresso, allowing the flavours to combine.
The coffee fan stressed that it's important to dissolve the sweetener so it blends evenly with the milk.
Josh noted that stirring the sweetener and espresso together is an optional step. He then pours the milk into the container with the sweetener and espresso because it's "not as cold as the ice and it's not gonna melt the ice."
The coffee shop owner shared that the next step is to pour the mixture into the cup of ice, then transfer what's in the cup back into the container, and finally pour it back into the cup.
This process, he claims, results in a "perfectly balanced iced latte that's gonna taste the same with every single sip."
Josh's iced latte tutorial on TikTok has garnered an impressive 3.7 million views, 325,100 likes and more than 3,500 comments in just four days.
One viewer confessed: "Yep I wasn't doing it right." Another exclaimed: "I just made this and WOW can I taste the difference! I usually pour the hot espresso over iced then add milk and it never tasted like a coffee shop. Now I just made this and it's perfecto."
A third added: "I've never been able to achieve it correctly and thought that I would have to pay crazy prices for iced lattes for the rest of my life but I might just have to try this!!"
A fourth remarked: "I’ve just made my morning coffee this way and wow, game changer thank you."
