Five arrested after angry mob clash with police in street protest amid 'beast' chants
Dozens of officers were called to the Methilhill area on Sunday.
Five people have been arrested after an angry mob clashed with police in a street protest outside a property in Fife.
Dozens of officers were called to Pirnie Street, in the Methilhill area after a crowd of around 100 people gathered at around 4.40pm on Sunday.
Roads were closed off by police in the surrounding area.
Video footage taken at the scene showed people holding placards displaying messages such as "No place 4 a beast" while chanting rang out.
A disturbance then broke out between the crowd and officers and eggs and stones were thrown at police at the scene. Specially trained public order officers were drafted in.
Officers could be seen handcuffing members of the public.
No one required hospital treatment for injuries.
Three men, aged 22, 38 and 47 were arrested and charged in connection with disorder. The 38-year-old was also arrested and charged in connection with assault.
They were all released on an undertaking to appear at court at a later date.
A 36-year-old woman and a 15-year-old female have been charged in connection with vandalising property.
Later footage shared online showed a man being led away from a property close to the protest as onlookers cheered.
Chief Superintendent Derek McEwan said: "Violence towards officers while carrying out their duties will not be tolerated and the behaviour they faced last night was unacceptable. Police officers are also members of the community and it is fortunate someone was not seriously injured.
"We understand there are strong feelings in the local area but that is no excuse for violence or disorder. We are particularly concerned with the number of children present last night.
"Officers continue to carry out enquiries, including reviewing video footage of the event to identify those who were involved.
"There was a protest at the same property on Friday, 1 August, 2025 and officers are also carrying out enquiries in relation to this incident.
"My message is that anyone taking part in disorder, or inciting or encouraging others to be involved, should expect to be identified and charged accordingly."
