Heartbroken Amanda Aminisova suffers worst Wimbledon defeat in 114 years and makes rueful quip directly at Swiatek

The 13th seed from American was outclassed as she endured a dreaded double bagel

Amanda Aminisova

Crestfallen Amanda Aminisova suffered the worst defeat at Wimbledon in 114 years and then ruefully said thank you to sensational rival Iga Swiatek.

The 13th seed from American was outclassed as she endured a dreaded double bagel 6-0, 6-0 loss at the hands of the brilliant Pole who made it six grand slams after finally mastering the intricacies of grass court tennis.

It's only the third time in Grand Slam history a Final ended with the loser not winning a match and the first time at Wimbledon since 1911.

Gutsy Aminisova didn't shirk her media obligations but was overcome with raw emotion when she addressed her mother – who only arrived for the Final hours before it took place, and fronted up facing a modern legend operating at full capacity.

She said: "Thank you Iga. You're such an incredible player and it obviously showed today. You've been such an inspiration to me. You've had such an incredible two weeks here. Getting to your first Wimbledon final here and winning is so special. Well done to you and your team.

"Thank you (mum) for being here and breaking the superstition of not flying in - it isn't why I lost here!"

"I know I didn't have enough today but I will keep putting in the work and I hope to be back here one day."
