Helicopter crashes on Isle of Wight as emergency services rush to scene

Emergency services have closed off roads to deal with the incident.

A helicopter has crashed on the Isle of Wight.


Emergency services were called to a field on the island off the coast of the south of England on Monday morning. The incident took place near the A3020 Shanklin Road at 9.24am on Monday.


There is currently no information on casualties.


A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesman said: "We were called at 9.24am to a report that a helicopter had come down in a field near the A3020 Shanklin Road.

"The road is closed due to the number of emergency services vehicles at the scene, so please avoid the area at this time."

Hampshire and IW Fire and Rescue Service told County Press: “Firefighters from Newport, Ventnor and Shanklin were called out shortly before 09:30am on Monday, 25 August, following reports of a light aircraft incident near Shanklin Road."

A witness has recalled the moment the chopper plunged to the ground.

Leigh Goldsmith said she was on her way to Shanklin when she saw the helicopter "spiralling".

She told County Press that it crashed into a hedge and was carrying four people onboard - two in the front and two in the back.

She further explained that it looked like the airbags had been activated at around 9.20am.
