Huge blaze at Scots recycling centre as 20 firefighters battle flames
Smoke is filtering across the city as firefighters work to bring it under control.
A huge blaze has broke out at a Scots recycling centre.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were alerted to the blaze involving a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery at Lochhead Landfill Site in Dunfermline at around 1:38pm this afternoon, Sunday, August 24.
Four fire appliances raced to the area and 20 firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire.
The SFRS have asked people to avoid the area as far as possible and urge locals keep windows and doors closed.
Images show plums of black smoke billowing overhead, spreading into nearby housing schemes in the city.
Footage from the scene shows the flames coming from the fire within the premises.
Locals have reported seeing cops at the entrace of the recycling centre, blocking entry.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We are currently in attendance at Lochhead Landfill Site in Dunfermline after being alerted to the incident at 1:38pm.
"We have four appliances at the scene and 20 firefighters who are working to bring the blaze under control."
They continued: "Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire involving a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery.
"Please avoid the area as far as possible and, if you live locally, keep windows and doors closed."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 1.28pm on Sunday, 24 August to reports of a fire within a landfill site near to the Wellwood area of Dunfermline.
“Operations Control mobilised four fire appliances and one height vehicle to the scene and approximately 22 firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a large number of mattresses and a shredder.
“There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at approximately 10.33am on Monday, 25 August after ensuring the area was made safe”
