With spider season fast approaching, householders are being warned to take precautions to keep them out of their homes. As temperatures begin to drop in September, UK households will face the dreaded autumn wave of spiders.

To keep warm, the creepy crawlies attempt to find shelter for the wetter, colder months, usually inside our homes. According to Pest UK, the average home hosts around 40 spiders, and in older houses, there can be hundreds.

While house spiders spend most of the year tucked away in attics, garages, and cupboards, late summer and early autumn see them venturing into bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas in search of a mate.

Chris Hutton, storage expert and owner of Adam's Selfstore, has revealed his go-to spider-repelling hack, which he claims will keep the creepy crawlies at bay.

Cinnamon, whether sprinkled around entry points or burned in cosy autumnal candles, repels spiders while filling your home with warm, seasonal scents.

The common cooking item can be purchased from Asda for as little as £1.

While house spiders spend most of the year tucked away in attics, garages, and cupboards, late summer and early autumn see them venturing into bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas in search of a mate.

Chris Hutton explains: "Spiders dislike strong smells, and cinnamon is one of their least favourite. Simply sprinkle ground cinnamon around windows, doors, skirting boards, and other entry points. You can also dust it in corners, under furniture, and near cupboards."

Not only is this simple and affordable hack highly effective, but it also smells wonderful and is completely natural.

With autumn just around the corner, many households will already be stocking up on cosy cinnamon candles, scented diffusers, and other seasonal treats, which can also effectively deter those pesky critters.

The warm, spicy aroma of cinnamon not only captures the comforting essence of the season but also naturally keeps spiders out, helping to make your home both welcoming and pest-free.

Extra Tips to Keep Spiders Away:

  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and vents.
  • Keep clutter and dark corners tidy, where spiders like to hide.
  • Combine with other seasonal scents like cloves or peppermint for extra deterrent power.

Another hack to keep spiders out is chalk.

Chalk is believed to work well at repelling spiders because they taste with their feet, and they don't like walking over disagreeable or strong flavours, such as chalk.

In 2023, stationery chain Ryman's reported that chalk sales had increased as more people bought the common household item to try to keep spiders at bay.

Chloe Danskin, Head of Marketing at Ryman, told the Irish Mirror at the time: "It's both unexpected and amazing to see chalk being embraced as an effective and affordable spider repellent. Our range of chalk products, from traditional white to colourful alternatives, is flying off the shelves as homeowners take proactive measures to keep their homes spider-free."
