Man appears in court after 'attempted murder' of police officer in Dumfries

A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in Dumfries.
Martin McGroary, 26, appeared at Dumfries Sheriff Court today, Thursday, July 31, after the incident earlier this week.
The policeman had been helping a member of the public on Herries Avenue in the town when he was hit by a car at around 1.20am on Monday, July 28.
The officer suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
His injures have been described as not life-threatening.
The 26-year-old appeared at today charged with assault to severe injury, danger to life, attempted murder, road traffic offences and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He made no plea and was remanded in custody to appear again at court within the next eight days.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the attempted murder of a police officer in Dumfries.
“Around 1.20am on Monday, July 28, a male officer was in attendance to assist a member of the public on Herries Avenue when he was struck by a car.
“He was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
“The 26-year-old man is due to appear in Dumfries Sheriff Court on Thursday, July 31.”
