'My mum said our baby name is the worst imaginable so I told her to shut up'

When it comes to baby names, some people feel obliged to make their opinions known

Picking a baby name is a difficult choice that is ultimately down to the parents. But that certainly doesn't stop others from sharing their opinion.

When picking one, it is important to accept that whatever is chosen will follow your little one for life, but that doesn't mean you can't be creative.

Another thing to accept is that other people may not like it, but as long as you and your partner are happy with a moniker, that's all that should matter - right?

Well we're all human, so it can be difficult to shrug these kinds of things off.

One new dad unfortunately couldn't seem to ignore the opinions of his family, as his baby's name received harsh judgement from his mother and wider loved ones.

He was so upset that he took to the world wide web to vent his frustrations. He explained on Reddit last year that his family always name new members after grandparents.

By this logic, after his wife gave birth, their new son should have been named either Jack or Parker. However the couple went against the grain and instead decided to pick a different baby name - Hollis.

He added that his wife's family don't follow naming traditions and felt it wasn't right to force his upon her, even admitting that he isn't a particular fan of it himself.

But the decision got his side of the family fuming, particularly his mother who dubbed it "the worst name imaginable", raging that their tradition is in place to prevent "stupidly named kids".

The father shared: "She told me we had no business breaking a long-held tradition in our family and there's a reason those traditions are there, so foolish people can't name their babies the worst names imaginable.

She also said my in-laws must be so smug, thinking they'll have at least two 'stupidly named grandkids' like they had all 'stupidly named kids'."

He recalled losing his temper with his mum, revealing that he told her to "shut up", which escalated the situation further as she became furious over his "rudeness".

However, online opinion sided with the dad, with many insisting his mother had no right to influence his and his wife's choice of name.

One commenter remarked: "If your mother wants to have a say in naming a baby, then she should have another baby.

"She was unnecessarily rude and disrespectful to you, your wife, your in-laws, and your child."

Another stated: "It's as simple as this: if the kid isn't theirs, they don't get to decide the name. If they have a naming tradition, it doesn't matter. It's still not their kid, so it's not their decision."
