A rape victim has told how she was viciously attacked by her best friend's husband in their home while his children slept upstairs.

Sarah Glen, 39, was raped by evil David Devine, 44, at his home in Busby, East Renfrewshire, in December 2022. The predator pounced on the mum-of-three moments after his wife went to check on their children.

The sickening assault only came to an end after Devine was pulled away from the mother by his horrified wife after she had returned to their living room. Devine was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting Sarah at the High Court in Edinburgh. He was caged for six years on Thursday.

Speaking after sentencing, Sarah told the Record: "There are no words to describe what this monster has put me through.

"I had not long since split up from my husband and at the time, I was devastated and vulnerable. My friend invited myself and my children over to her home so she could offer me condolences.

"At one point, she went upstairs to see to the children and we were left on the sofa. That is when he raped me.

"I kept telling him no - it felt like I had told him no a million times - but he just carried on. I didn't want to shout and scream because there were children in the house.

"When my friend came back downstairs, she found him on top of me and pulled him off of me.

"I should have been in a place of safety - my friend invited me round to talk about my marriage breakdown but in his mind, he saw that as an opportunity to assault me."

Devine was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely and handed a non-harassment order.

Sarah has since been left suffering from intense trauma.

She said: "It has ruined my life and had a massive impact on my mental health. There was no way I could exist in the same place as him, I never want to see his face again. I'm slowly rebuilding my life, but at one point, I was rock bottom."

The mum has bravely waived her right to anonymity to encourage other victims to speak out about sexual violence.

She said: "I'm sharing my story to remind other victims that no matter what you want for yourself, you should speak out to protect others.

"This man attacked me in his own home with children and his wife present. He is a dangerous individual and other people deserve to know what he is capable of.

"My life has been torn apart by what he did to me, but just hearing the judge sentence him validated me and no longer makes me feel like I want to bang my head against a brick wall.

"The process was long and daunting, but if I hadn't done it, there would never have been justice.

"If I didn't speak up, I could have allowed him to prey on someone else."

Rape Crisis Scotland chief executive Sandy Brindley said: “We are grateful to Sarah for choosing to speak out about her experience to help other rape survivors.

“Survivors who decide to report what has happened to them not only have to deal with the trauma of being raped, but the devastating reality of the criminal justice system.

"The justice process, which often takes years to complete, has a huge impact on the mental health of rape survivors. It’s important for survivors to know that there is support available to them and that they do not have to go through that experience alone.”
