Scots households urged to keep windows closed for next four weeks starting tonight
Householders are being advised to take precautions due to a particular invader.
Scottish householders are being advised to keep their windows closed for the next four weeks. With temperatures set to drop this week, Scotland is heading into a period of cooler, more unsettled weather.
The occasional orange leaf isn’t the only sign that autumn is arriving; house spiders are, too. As the nights draw in, these eight-legged invaders start seeking warmth indoors.
Experts are warning that people should watch out for more than standard house spiders. The noble false widow spider (Steatoda nobilis) is reportedly becoming increasingly common in UK homes, and areas are being put on high alert.

While bites are rare, they can cause symptoms similar to those of a bee or wasp sting, including pain, swelling, and, in some cases, fever.
Alan Reid, double-glazed windows expert at Art Windows and Doors, warned that the next four weeks are essential.
He said: “Male house spiders and false widows are on the move, and homes with open windows are at risk of infestation. Now is the time to seal gaps and shut windows before spider season peaks.”
How to keep spiders out
Close windows in the evening
Spiders move indoors at dusk. Shutting windows from 7pm onwards is the simplest defence.
Seal gaps and cracks
Inspect doors, windows, and vents for openings and use weatherstripping or sealant to block entry.
Use natural repellents
Peppermint, tea tree, or lavender essential oils mixed with water can deter spiders. Spray around likely entry points.
Keep it clean
Regular dusting and vacuuming removes hiding spots and food sources.
What to do if you do spot a false widow spider
Stay calm
They’re not aggressive and only bite if provoked.
Remove humanely
The “glass and paper” method works well, trap and release outside.
Treat bites
Most bites cause localised pain and swelling. Wash the area, apply a cold compress, and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.
According to Pest UK, the average home hosts around 40 spiders, and in older houses, there can even be hundreds. So it's safe to say that getting rid of them is a priority for most homeowners during the autumn months.
Lifestyle influencer Chantel Mila on TikTok, who boasts more than 1.6 million followers, says you can easily repel spiders and dust mites from climbing onto your bed by making a simple spray with just two ingredients.
In a recent video, she explained: "This mix is my go-to to leave your room bug-free and smelling amazing."
Even better, it only requires two household staples that you've probably already got in your cupboards - white vinegar and essential oil.
Chantel said: "This powerful mix can be used on your mattress, bedhead and bedsides to repel spiders and dust."
