Scottie Scheffler reveals golf superstition that led him on hunt for £40 eBay bargain

Down-to-earth World No.1 isn't shy in hunting a bargain as he rummages around the internet looking for a key item

Superstar Scottie Scheffler admits his superstitions led to him hunting eBbay for a £40 bargain.

The World No.1’s undoubted skill and magical talent have elevated him to the summit of golf and brought comparisons wth Tiger Woods.

But, aside from his ability, Scheffler also has other attributes and is rigid in sticking with the same stuff. The American star has used the same ball marker and yardage-book cover throughout his rise to the top of the game and had to hit the internet when he lost his perfect pitch-mark repairer that he’d bought from the pro shop at Cypress Point during his recent purple patch.

Scheffler, who will lead America at next month's Ryder Cup, said: “I use the same divot tool and ball marker most days, so a little ‘stitious. Just habit. No reason to it. I like it.

"But I don’t use it because it’s from Cypress Point. It’s just the right size and it’s metal, so they don’t really make those types of divot tools anymore, so I found one there and I’ve stuck with it.

“I bought it in the shop last year or maybe two years ago, and I lost it at some point and I literally could not find another divot tool like that."

Scheffler, who has won almost £70m million in his golfing career, continued: "Then I went on eBay, found a Cypress Point ball marker, paid like 50 bucks for it.

"Then I went back this year, and they were a little cheaper on-site so I got a couple extras. He [seller] sent it to me and wrote me a little note and everything. He was a nice guy.”

Scheffler’s routines and practices have worked a treat with The Open win last month adding to his Major haul and he’s now in the hunt for the FedEx Cup again.

The superstar opened his account at the St Jude Championship in Memphis with a strong beginning as he chases down another title.

Scheffler said: “I did some solid stuff. I felt like I was close to playing a really great round but ended up with a solid round. Overall a decent start. It’s easy to say, try to hit fairways, try to hit greens. It’s just way harder to do it. It’s way harder to hit a lot of fairways and hit a lot of greens.

"Everybody always intends to do that when they go out there, and it’s one of those things that’s a lot easier said than done.

"When I’m executing and hitting fairways, it’s a lot easier to avoid bogeys, but when you start missing fairways out here, bogeys are going to come pretty quick.

"Overall I thought it was a really good test. You’ve got to hit the ball well out here and there’s great rewards for good shots and the bad shots are being punished as well.”
