Steve Clarke names Scotland squad for Denmark and Belarus clashes as Aaron Hickey makes emotional return
It's back into the real stuff as Scotland's 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign gets started next week
Steve Clarke has named his Scotland as he gears up for another World Cup qualifying campaign – with fit-again Aaron Hickey called up for the first time in almost two years.
The Scots take on Denmark in Copenhagen next Friday before a trip to Belarus on Monday September 8, and need a couple of positive results after how the competitive action ended last time out with that thumping against Greece at Hampden.
The summer friendlies were a mixed bag, a dreary loss at home to Iceland before a comfortable win away to Liechtenstein, but now things go up a couple of notches.
Away to Denmark is never easy but it's a group Scotland should be targeting qualification from as we look ahead to next summer's World Cup in North America.
The headline news is the return of Hickey, who has overcome a nightmare year with injury to earn his first call-up since the 2-0 defeat in Spain in October 2023.
As expected Clarke has named Serie A midfield trio Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour and Lennon Miller while there's a place for new Bournemouth winger Ben Gannon Doak.
There's no room for Lawrence Shankland however with Che Adams, Lyndon Dykes, George Hirst and Hibs hero Kieron Bowie the four strikers in the group.
